KEY POINTS:
In tough economic times Aucklanders have proved that they're pretty good at putting on a party, the Auckland City Mission says.
Diane Robertson, who heads the 450-strong volunteer army that puts on Christmas lunch, said yesterday that everything from the food to the venue, presents and entertainment was donated for the 1300 children, mums and dads, elderly and homeless who enjoyed the yuletide trimmings.
In the past, the mission has paid for parts of the dinner but because of rising costs, this year that was something that just could not happen, Ms Robertson said.
That prompted the mission to launch a campaign to make sure the event was fully supported by donations.
"We know everyone is feeling the pinch - there's been a lot of people suffering this Christmas - but I think people have thought, 'Actually, there are people who are finding it tougher than me'," Ms Robertson said. "Aucklanders have shown how generous they are."
At least $20,000 worth of ham, chicken, vegetables and desserts was donated.
