A lift shaft close to upmarket restaurants and apartments on Auckland's Viaduct went up in flames this morning.
A blaze in an elevator space in Shed 22 on Princes Wharf set off a number of alarms and saw eight fire appliances sent to the scene at 10am.
Shed 22 hosts upmarket apartments and Master Chef presenter Simon Gault's restaurant Euro. It is also close to the Hilton Hotel.
It is understood the fire took hold in an unused area of the building, with the lift shaft marked for demolition.
"It appears this [lift] shaft was getting demolished, so it seems as though the area was closed to public access," Megan Ruru, Auckland Fire Service shift manager said.
