Auckland school students participating in the city's mock election have given a clear mandate to Labour, with the party securing 47 per cent of the vote.
Students from around 30 schools took part in Auckland City's Kids Voting programme, which aims to teach young people about the democratic process.
Nearly 4500 students voted in the mock MMP election, held as part of the Civic Awareness in Schools initiative.
Auckland City's electoral officer, Dale Ofsoske, said an analysis of both results showed that students and adults in Auckland voted roughly the same way.
"I think these results show that there was probably a lot of discussion about the election and politics around the dinner table and that may be because it was such a close election."
He said it was clear students' votes basically mirrored their parents' voting patterns.
Mr Ofsoske said the Kids Voting programme had been a huge success in helping to engage young people in thinking about the democratic process.
