Auckland rail service returning to normal after pedestrian killed by train

Train services in Auckland are slowly returning to normal after a pedestrian was killed when they were struck by a train in Glen Innes this morning.

Shortly before 10am Auckland Transport said there would be minor delays on the Southern and Eastern lines as services returned to normal following the emergency.

Emergency services were called to the scene - near Apirana Ave and Merton Rd - at about 7am after reports a pedestrian had been hit at the railway crossing.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Police haven't confirmed the age or gender of the pedestrian.

A witness standing on the station platform told the Herald they heard the train's horn beep twice as the train approached the railway crossing,

"There was a pedestrian walking across the rails as the lights were on. [The train driver] beeped and tried to stop.''

The woman said although she could not clearly see the pedestrian at the time, she confirmed that the crossing's warning lights and bells were ringing as the train approached the station.

Emergency services - including police, fire and ambulance - arrived on the site quickly.
Officers escorted passengers off the train and onto the platform and commuters were asked to find alternative transport as the scene was cordoned off.
