KEY POINTS:
Guinness World Records has confirmed Auckland has the world's largest multiplex screen, at Hoyts' new Sylvia Park complex.
The gigantic screen is 30.6 metres wide, the biggest in technical category: world's largest permanent 35mm cinema screen, Hoyts said.
Given there are some 35,000 screens in America alone, and well over 50,000 around the world, it was an amazing achievement for New Zealand, Hoyts chief executive Stuart McInnes said.
The screen took 20 people to install and was powered by a newly developed German projector and lense combination, with an 8000-watt refrigerant cooled lamp to project images.
The first film to be shown on the giant screen will be the premiere of the New Zealand film, Black Sheep.
Hoyts Sylvia Park opens on Thursday.
