Auckland man killed in house fire

A man died in a house fire in Hillsborough last night.

Deputy chief fire safety officer Jonathan Shelley said the fire happened in a self-contained unit under a house on Olsen Ave at about 9pm.

Occupants of the house called emergency services. "There were no smoke alarms ... and we are investigating the cause," Mr Shelley said.

The man, who was dead when the Fire Service arrived, was the sole occupant of the address.
