KEY POINTS:
A kebab shop owner was left in a coma after a serious assault in Auckland late last night.
Police said the assault on the 39-year-old Iranian man at his Glenfield business about 11pm was unprovoked and vicious.
Detective Steve Pivac of North Shore police said the man was stable but in a coma in Auckland Hospital, and needed urgent facial surgery.
He told police his attackers were two males, but was unable to give a detailed description, Mr Pivac said.
"The injuries suffered by this man are horrific. Extreme violence has been used. It is among the worst beatings that I have seen for a long time," he said.
Security tapes were being examined, and a forensic team was analysing the scene.
People who were near the shop, All Go Kebab in Wairau Rd, last night were asked to contact police.
