Auckland Harbour Bridge car-surfer snapped

Images of the car-surfing incident on the Auckland Harbour Bridge were captured by a bus passenger.

New images have emerged of a man car surfing on Auckland's Harbour Bridge.
The images were sent to the Herald and appear to show a man climbing out of the passenger side of a silver Subaru Legacy station wagon.

They were taken by bus passenger Bruce Miller last Tuesday around 3pm.

"In discussion afterwards [me and another passenger] both said that our first thoughts were for the drivers of the cars following, in the event of the guy falling off the car roof and being run over," he said.

Police were investigating the incident and enquiries were ongoing, Waitemata police district communications manager Beth Bates said.

The sighting follows a string of other car surfing instances that have been condemned by police.

Acting National Road Policing Manager Inspector Peter McKennie said car surfing was not only dangerous, "but exceedingly stupid".

"It puts the pranksters at risk of serious harm or death, but it also puts the safety of innocent road users in jeopardy, and the law-abiding public should not have to share the roads with people who choose to behave in this way."

Last August, a man filmed car-surfing during a taxi ride over the Auckland Harbour Bridge was slammed by police at the time as "idiotic and reckless".

Just last month another man was spotted car surfing on Tauranga's Marine Parade, prompting Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion to say, "we can do all that we can to keep people safe but we can't fix stupid, and that's what this is".

It followed an incident in Tauranga on Omanu Beach in 2010 when a man died after rolling off the bonnet of a car he was surfing on and was run over by the vehicle.
