Slain teenager Augustine Borrell died after a knife plunged 10cm into his chest, pushing over his heart and other organs, the High Court at Auckland heard today.
Borrell, a 17 year-old Auckland Grammar student, died after a confrontation with Haiden Mark Davis, 20, who is charged with Borrell's murder.
Davis says he didn't mean to kill Borrell and has pleaded not guilty.
Crown Prosecutor Sue Gray says a post mortem revealed Borrell died of a stab wound to the heart that was 10cm deep, pushed over his heart and collapsed a lung.
She said Borrell had been partying at a Hamilton Road, Herne Bay address before he got a taxi ride home.
As they passed the service station on Jervois Road he and others saw some people they knew and got out.
Davis was already there and a fight broke out between him and Borrell. Ms Gray said not many punches were thrown but by the end of it Borrell was lying on the ground gasping for air on the road.
He showed no signs of life when emergency services arrived. He was pronounced dead at hospital soon after.
The Crown will call up to 40 witnesses during the trial which is expected to last three weeks.
