The Royal Commission on Auckland Governance will deliver its report to the Government on Wednesday, Prime Minister John Key said today.
He said the Government would hold on to it "for a few days" while it worked out its response and then it would be released.
Mr Key said ministers had not received any briefings of any kind on the report's conclusions.
The inquiry was set up by the previous government and has been considering local body arrangements for the city.
There has been speculation it will recommend a "super council" for the wider region, setting up a contest for Lord Mayor of Auckland.
