Passenger sailings between Auckland city and the suburb of Devonport were disrupted for a period today after one ferry clipped another that was berthed at a wharf.
The Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) said it had begun an investigation into the incident, which happened this morning.
It said information to date was that the ferry Kea, which had 38 people on board, had a mechanical or electrical failure, which caused it to lose steering and hit the berthed ferry Starflyte.
No one was injured and damage was limited to the Starflyte, which was left with a crack less than a metre in length in its hull planking.
A spokeswoman for ferry operator Fullers said sailings were disrupted for about an hour, but the Kea was back on its run and the normal timetable was operating.
She said the Starflyte was not in service at the time of the incident.
