Auckland Council moves to slash 30 per cent from travel budget

The Auckland Council aims to slash thousands from its travel budget in a bid to save money.

The announcement was made today as part of council chief executive Stephen Town new performance objectives for 2018.

One of the measures is saving $600,000 from the travel budget, a cut of about 30 per cent from $1.95m this year, to $1.34m next year.

Councillors agreed to the performance objectives at a confidential session of the Governing Body meeting yesterday.

The objectives look at financial management, cultural and performance, operational performance, service delivery and transforming customer and community experience.

Town this week rejected an attempt by councillors Efeso Collins and John Watson to debate the council's business-class and premium-class travel expenditure.

A spokesperson later told the Herald the matter was already being investigated and due to be reported back to the Finance and Performance Committee in February/March next year.
