Auckland Council has closed parts of Devonport's Victoria Wharf while it investigates the historic wharf's condition.
The wharf, which sits alongside Devonport Wharf, is a popular place for visitors and fishermen.
Fencing has been put in place to close the cargo section of the wharf.
However, the first section of the wharf and access way to Devonport Wharf, can still be used.
Ian Maxwell from the council says Victoria Wharf is in need of a detailed safety assessment, which will help officials to determine options for maintenance and future use.
