Auckland is a step closer to having a uniform recycling system in place with the rollout of new recycling bins in both northern and western regions.
From today until the end of June, more than 210,000 households in Rodney, North Shore and Waitakere will receive new 240-litre bins. The bins replace crates in Rodney, and smaller 140-litre bins in North Shore and Waitakere.
Regional Policy and Strategy Committee chair, councillor George Wood, said the smaller bins and crates are often not big enough and rubbish is left blowing around the streets.
He says the larger bins, which take both paper and plastic recyclables, will be more efficiently sorted at a plant which is already processing rubbish for a majority of Auckland suburbs.
Mr Wood says it brings residents in these areas in line with most other Auckland households which already have the 240-litre bins.
