Auckland has climbed four places to 61 in the latest listing of the world's top universities.
Auckland shares its position with the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings.
More than 2000 universities in 130 countries are included in the rankings.
Other New Zealand universities ranked included Otago down one place at 125, Canterbury down two at 188, Victoria down two at 229, Massey down 16 at 299 and Waikato which climbs 64 places to 314.
The rankings, launched in 2004, are compiled every year with selections by academics for excellence in research quality.
A global survey of about 5000 employers also identifies the universities they most wish to recruit from.
The top five universities in the latest rankings are Harvard, Cambridge, Yale, University College London, and Imperial College London and Oxford tied for fifth.
