Airlines are working to clear passenger backlogs at Auckland Airport after fog caused delays and cancellations to domestic flights this morning.
Auckland Airport spokesman Richard Llewellyn said the fog had cleared by late morning and flights were returning to schedule.
About 14 flights this morning were delayed and about 20 cancelled, most of which were to or from smaller regional centres.
"The jet planes which serve the international and the main domestic trunk routes all have the technology on board that can enable them to talk to the technology on the ground, so that they can land in low visibility, whereas the turboprop planes don't,'' Mr Llewellyn told APNZ.
"So anytime there's fog at nearly any airport in New Zealand, it will nearly always be the smaller regional flights that get affected the most.''
