Attorney-General Chris Finlayson has tweeted a picture of himself meeting Pope Francis at the pontiff's inauguration in Rome.
He posted a photo from inside the Vatican as well as an image of him chatting with US Vice President Joe Biden outside.
Mr Finlayson, who represented the Government at the inauguration, told Newstalk ZB he was about 90th in a line of dignitaries to meet the Pope and he gave him New Zealand's best wishes.
