An eight-year-old girl left traumatised after a man tried to abduct her as she was walking to school has given police a detailed description of the offender.
Police said the man tried to force the girl into his car in Kumeu, northwest of Auckland, about 7.30am last Tuesday.
When she resisted, he slapped her on the head before driving off.
She said the man was dark skinned, wearing a black hoodie with tight cuffs, a grey T-shirt or singlet and a cap with a white peak.
He was driving a black car with tinted windows, possibly with a spoiler on the back, and a black or brown german shepherd dog was in the back seat.
Police spokesman Kevin Loughlin said there had been a number of calls from members of the public which had been extremely useful and provided police with some good information about vehicles seen in the area.
Anyone with information should contact Kumeu police.
