An alleged bank robber was caught by a technology-savvy policeman just minutes after a failed heist in central Auckland today.
Just before 9.30am, there was an attempted robbery of Ponsonby's ANZ Bank by a man who had an object that could have been used as a weapon, a police spokeswoman said.
The man left the building empty handed while the teller was discussing the situation with her manager.
About 10 minutes later a motorbike police officer who knew what the suspect looked like saw a man fitting the description.
''[The officer] pulled up alongside him in a nearby street and took a photo of him and sent that photo to another police officer who was at the ANZ Bank at the time, looking at CCTV footage, and the two photos matched up,'' the spokeswoman said.
