A Wellington man stabbed in the back early on Sunday morning has been transferred to Christchurch's Burwood spinal unit.
Detective Senior Sergeant Shane Cotter said the 22-year-old man's injuries were not life-threatening, but "there is concern about damage to his spinal cord".
The incident happened after a verbal confrontation between two groups of men on the forecourt of the BP Roadmaster in Taranaki Street about 1.40am.
Mr Cotter said police had found a white four-door Mazda Familia in the Hutt Valley. They have yet to speak to the car's occupants but believed they were involved in the stabbing.
Police are still interested in talking with anyone who witnessed the stabbing, as the forecourt area was relatively busy at the time of the assault.
