One man is in hospital with serious neck wounds, a police officer is nursing bruises and two men are in police cells after two violent incidents in Napier last night.
In the most serious incident, police said a 38-year-old man was lucky to be alive after a broken bottle was used to stab him in the neck during a brawl. One of the deep lacerations missed the man's vital carotid artery by a few centimetres.
Police were called to the Westshore Hotel just after midnight. One officer said it appeared an all-in brawl had taken place.
A 26-year-old man was arrested and charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the fight to come forward.
The second incident happened earlier in the evening at a police drink-drive checkpoint.
Acting Senior Sergeant Nigel Hurley said a man approached on foot and threatened an officer.
"He then took a swing at him," Mr Hurley said.
It took several officers to subdue and arrest the man, who continued to fight all the way to the cells.
He was facing a number of charges, including assault on police and resisting arrest.
