KEY POINTS:
The seemingly random attack on two North Shore teens as they came out of a movie on Saturday night appears to have been triggered by an egg-throwing incident earlier in the evening.
The Herald reported on Monday how the 16-year-old boys told police they had been threatened with weapons and robbed of their clothing and cellphones before one of them was forced into their attackers' car and driven to an ATM in Milford. The second victim followed his kidnapped mate to the ATM, where both boys were forced to withdraw money.
However, following further investigations and two arrests this week, police say the attack - while still terrifying for the boys - was not so random.
Detective Sergeant Scott Armstrong said the victims had allegedly thrown eggs at the accused earlier in the evening, and the money taken from the ATM was to pay for egg damage to their car. Mr Armstrong said two North Shore teens were arrested this week after police traced back the number plate of the egged car.
He said a 16-year-old was found on Monday. An 18-year-old handed himself in to the police on Tuesday after seeing his friend taken into custody.
Both accused were due to appear in the North Shore Youth Court yesterday charged with two counts of aggravated robbery.
