KEY POINTS:
International industry experts say the "green sleeve" ATM card reader has only a 10 per cent chance of beating a skimming attack.
German bank security giant Wincor Nixdorf supplies Hong Kong banks with anti-skimming technology. Since being introduced in 2003, not a single skimming crime has been reported in the bustling metropolis.
Ricardos Khoury, Wincor Nixdorf Asia regional manager, says neither "green sleeve" - also known as card reader throat devices - or "jitter" technology is effective against skimmers. The throat devices can be replicated, says Khoury, while credit cards can be read in a split second, rendering the jitter mechanism virtually useless.
"These people are smart. If they can steal your account details and PIN data and use it within 10 minutes on the other side of the world, they can definitely produce many types of devices that look similar to PIN pads and card reader throat devices," says Khoury.
