KEY POINTS:
Police have arrested two Romanians in connection with high-tech ATM skimming operations in Auckland and Rotorua.
Alexandru Tudor, 24, and Marcel Cismas, 35, each face two charges of dishonestly using card reading devices attached to a Westpac ATM in Rotorua between January 20 and 21, and a National Bank ATM in Auckland.
More charges are likely to follow.
The pair were arrested at an Auckland hotel last Wednesday and appeared before Auckland District Court on Friday. They did not plead and were remanded in custody until early February.
The Herald on Sunday understands the pair had spent two weeks here and were preparing to leave the country when they were arrested.
Earlier last month nine Westpac customers had their money cards read by an illegal electronic skimming device in Rotorua.
The device was placed over the slot where a bank card is inserted and reads the data from the magnetic strip.
Auckland police are still investigating skimming fraud at National Bank ATMs in Queen St, Vulcan Lane and Parnell last November.
