KEY POINTS:
At least 10 people have been caught out by a company offering non-existent direct flights from Auckland to Bali.
The company has been offering direct flights to Bali, which its website said were due to start next month, for at least $1000 return since about Christmas, police said.
Detective Constable John Taylor of Orewa police said the legitimacy of the internet booking company was being investigated.
"People should be very wary because there are no direct flights between Auckland and Bali, and Auckland Airport says none are scheduled in the future," Mr Taylor told NZPA today.
Mr Taylor would not name the company or the website as investigations were still continuing.
He said police became aware of the possible scam when a couple who had booked the flights contacted them.
"They said they tried to get their money back but despite email assurances from the company they still haven't seen the money."
Mr Taylor said he was aware of 10 people who had paid $1000 or more on credit for the flights and hoped there were not many more caught out.
"There could be hundreds of people, who knows, though I would hope it's not that many."
Anyone who has booked a direct Auckland-Bali flight is asked to contact Mr Taylor on (09) 427 9829 or email him on John.M.Taylor@police.govt.nz
