A life-size version of the Green Man in the pedestrian "cross now" lights brought laughter to Auckland's CBD, holding hands with shoppers and workers to publicise a road safety campaign.
"People in the city are often busy and can be distracted so we just want to remind them to not cross in the middle of the block or on a red light, but to go to an intersection and wait for the green light," said Auckland Transport walking and cycling manager Kathryn King.
The joint campaign with the NZ Transport Agency runs until the end of July and is aimed at reducing the 50 serious or fatal injuries suffered by pedestrians from 2009-13 in the city centre - nine of them on Queen St or Karangahape Rd.
The latest survey of seven locations on Queen St found that in one hour, 2250 people crossed the road away from the light.
