At-fault drivers are being held to account by the New Zealand Transport Agency, with invoices for the damage caused to roads totalling over $1 million last year.
Nationwide, 176 crash recovery invoices were issued during 2012, with a combined total of $1.14 million.
While breakdown figures were provided for most regions when requested under the Official Information Act, Wairarapa-specific figures were unavailable.
NZTA group manager for highways and network operations Colin Crampton said when a driver was at fault in a crash, with associated costs such as clean-up, traffic management or damage to roadside equipment or signage on the state highway network, those costs needed to be recovered.
"We have two choices - we can either seek to recover the costs from the individuals responsible, or we can charge all road-users and taxpayers for recovering the costs.
