The Auckland District Law Society is to become an incorporated society, allowing it to retain ownership of its $12 million assets.
The Lawyers and Conveyancers Act, which came into force last week, was framed to work with one national law society, but Auckland society president Keith Berman said he saw the New Zealand Law Society and its Auckland counterpart as "like Venus and Mars".
Auckland voted against the adoption of a new, "one-society" constitution when the NZLS council met on July 18, and yesterday voted 1911 for incorporation and 598 against.
