A Canadian security industry worker who was kicked numerous times in the head while trying to stop an early-morning assault in Napier is surprised almost no one else tried to stop the thuggery he says could have ended in death.
Phoenix Gordon, 22, of Vancouver, was one of four people taken to hospital after the attack which happened just off West Quay, Ahuriri, about 2.30am on Sunday.
Returning to the still blood-spattered scene yesterday, Mr Gordon said numerous people appeared to stand back and watch as a man was being kicked.
He said a police officer was among those in the vicinity but added: "Playing devil's advocate I'd have to say it's possible he was preoccupied. I did call out [to him] but he didn't seem to hear."
Mr Gordon said there were "dozens" of people nearby when he first noticed the assault.
