Q: I was in Freedom Furniture's Newmarket store and saw a table with an advertised price, which I decided to buy. I was told that I had to pick it up from their Papatoetoe distribution centre or pay $85 to have it delivered to my house. I just want to pick it up from Newmarket. The manager says that's not possible as there's no storage there. Is this legal? Surely you should be able to buy the product from the store you see it in, at the price it's advertised at. - Annabelle, Auckland
A: This looks like a Fair Trading Act issue, because you can't buy the table for the price it's advertised at - you're either going to have to pay delivery fees or for petrol to get out south. Additional costs have to be clearly specified.
Freedom Furniture says it will update the website so that it is made clearer but you could make a complaint to the Commerce Commission.
