Q: My rugby club has quite a bit of carpark space. During the week, people who work nearby seem to be using it, leaving their cars there all day. Is there any way we can charge them for it? - Jason, Whangarei
A: Solicitor Vanassa McGoldrick says you probably can. If you lease the land, you'll need to check you have the right to sub-lease.
If that is all in order, you can put up a sign advising that people who park there will be towed, and who does the towing.
"They could also erect a sign offering carparks for rent, or advertise car parks for rent, and then they would need a contract between them and the person renting that stipulates the conditions of them renting - what they will pay, how much notice each has to give the other if either want to terminate the arrangement, all those kinds of things," says McGoldrick.
She says you'll still need towing signs and you'll need to be proactive about keeping the parks clear for people who pay for them.
