Heading north from Auckland through the Northern Tunnels, the speed limit through the tunnels and for some distance after leaving them is 80km/h.
Around 1km before SH1 passes the Puhoi turnoff (on the left), the speed limit changes to 100km/h. Southbound traffic, on the other hand, has an 80km/h speed limit as it passes the Puhoi turnoff. Is there any reason the speed limit for northbound traffic can't stay at 80km/h until after the Puhoi turnoff? It would take only the re-positioning of one 100km/h speed limit sign to make that intersection so much safer for everybody.

The permanent speed limit on SH1 past the Puhoi Rd intersection, in both the northbound and southbound directions, is 100km/h. The current 80km/h limit applies over the same distance for both north and south-bound drivers from 575m south of the Puhoi Rd intersection to 305m south of the Johnstones Hill tunnels. The 80km/h speed limit is an interim operational safety measure introduced by the Transport Agency because of the complex driving conditions at the northern end of the toll road. Longer term, this section of highway will be bypassed as part of Transport Agency plans to extend the motorway to Warkworth, and speed limits will be reviewed then.
Are you able to find out why speed humps are appearing in roads off Dominion Rd such as Marlborough St and King Edward St, and who pays for these? I live in a street nearby and am concerned that if these are being used to discourage "rat running" it will make the problem worse for us. It's also a pain for us as we use these streets regularly. My concern about who pays is in relation to the council deficit and rates, as ultimately ratepayers pay for council "initiatives".
