My question relates to what I'm calling street architecture and where the inspiration comes from. What is the future of the Panmure roundabout centrepiece which is quite striking and definitely retro? Hopefully this structure will be kept should the roundabout go.
Chris Inglis, Auckland.
The sign is actually owned by the Panmure Business Association. It was installed in 1994 as part of a streetscape upgrade by the association. It was designed to represent the growth of Panmure between the 1940s and 60s, with a 1950s theme of space exploration and new thinking towards technology. The business association will make a decision on what happens to it, when the roundabout is replaced by a new intersection with traffic lights. Feedback is evenly split between keeping the sign and getting rid of it.
The bus stop between Ladies Mile and Greenlane Rd East heading into the City was to be shifted to in front of Somervell Church. The announcement was made a long time ago but nothing has happened. Where the bus stop is at present, it inhibits the flow of traffic wanting to turn from Remuera Rd into Greenlane Rd East, causing delays. Do you know if this bus stop is ever going to be moved?
Roy Towers, Remuera.
Auckland Transport is not aware of any proposal to relocate this bus stop on Remuera Rd. This stop is on a fare stage and extremely well located for passengers to transfer from the 625, 635 and 645 services on to the 007 service. If this stop was removed there would be a need for other additional stops to compensate. There wouldn't be much gain for general traffic by removing this stop.
As a regular public transport user, I'm pleased to see the bus lane set up on Fanshawe St. However, on some days I need to drive and park in the Auckland Transport Fanshawe St carpark. When leaving, I turn left on to Fanshawe St then left on to Halsey St. This is problematic with that lane now exclusively for buses. The distance from the carpark exit to the end of the bus lane is about 100m. During peak hour traffic, it seems hazardous and inefficient for me to merge into the lane to the right of the bus lane, only to then re-enter the left lane shortly afterwards. Is this really what is required?
