Can you please advise why the contractor has stockpiled thousands of concrete slabs for the Waterview tunnel at Maioro St when the tunnel is being bored from Waterview? Malcolm Elliott, Auckland.
The NZ Transport Agency says the plan was to store the concrete tunnel segments at the (southern) Mt Roskill end of the project and transport them through the first tunnel to the north. However, there is not enough room at the Waterview end to offload trucks from the concrete factory in East Tamaki and then turn them around without significant delays to the project. The segments are delivered through the tunnel to Alice, the tunnel boring machine, on MSVs (Multi Service Vehicles) especially designed to carry the heavy loads.
Can you please ask NZTA what possible excuse there might be for using multiple chainsaws to cut down trees along the edge of Northwestern Motorway adjacent to Eden Terrace and Arch Hill residential streets from around 2am to after 3am on Monday, June 29? We were not given any warning or notice about any required work. There is nothing quite like the sound of chainsaws in the middle of the night to keep you awake and reduce productivity for the whole next day. Jane Matthews, Kingsland.
The Transport Agency carried out work to remove pest plants from the edge of the Northwestern Motorway overnight on June 28/29 as part of work that has been ongoing for the past four years. To ensure the safety of motorists using the motorway as well as to minimise the impact on traffic movements, the work has been carried out when traffic levels are lower, which is generally after daylight hours. NZTA staff completed a letter drop to around 100 properties before the work to advise what work they were doing and why. The aim is to complete noisy work as early as possible and before midnight. However, the work was carried out later than was intended and the NZ Transport Agency apologises to anyone who may have been affected. In future it will programme work in this area for daylight hours.
With regard to motorway entry controlled by lights. When there are no queues I often see the light turn green but then turn red before a car arrives at the lights. Is it okay to proceed through the red light at this point? Clive Beacham, Auckland.
