A prominent New Zealand artist charged last week with sexually violating a woman in her Hastings home is Napier painter and sculptor Paratene Matchitt.
The 72-year-old appeared in the Napier District Court on Thursday, and was granted interim suppression of name to enable him to inform his family of his arrest.
The order, issued by Judge Geoff Rea, lapsed at 9am today, and no further application was being made, said lawyer Michael McAleer.
Matchitt was arrested on Thursday morning after a CIB investigation of a complaint that a woman was raped the previous weekend.
He is charged with sexual violation, indecent assault, and entering the woman's home with intent to commit a crime.
The judge declined an application for bail, and Matchitt was remanded in custody for further proceedings tomorrow.
No plea has been made and the case is expected to proceed to a depositions hearing of the police evidence and a possible trial next year.
