An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 on the Richter scale has been felt in the Arthur's Pass area of the South Island.
It struck at about 2.40 this morning.
The quake was measured at a focal depth of 15 kilometres.
It was centred 30 kilometres west of Springfield, 30 kilometres south of Arthur's Pass, 70 kilometres north of Ashburton, and 90 kilometres west of Christchurch.
