Aratoi art and history museum may become home to a " nationally significant" collection of contemporary New Zealand art, on loan from a collector.
The owner approached Aratoi management saying she did not want the collection split up, or sold, after her death. Her son does not want it and while her granddaughter is interested, she is too young to take responsibility for it.
According to a report made by Aratoi management to Masterton District Council, the art collection consists of 51 works, 29 of which are of significant value artistically and financially.
Included in the 29 more valuable works is art by Gordon Walters, Ralph Hotere, Milan Mrkusich, Mervyn Williams, Robin White and John Drawbridge.
The remainder includes art from artists of the calibre of Gretchen Albrecht, Simon Morris, Michael Smither and Don Binney.
