A Wairarapa man facing an arson charge may offer a defence of insanity.
The man, whose attendance was excused in Masterton District Court this week, was granted interim name suppression by presiding Judge Chris Tuohy.
Defence lawyer Louise Elder said although the man was now fit to plead to the
charge he was mentally unwell at the time he was arrested.
"He's subsequently been transferred from prison to hospital.
"At the time of the alleged offending he's considered to have been insane," Ms Elder said.
