Two people managed to escape an arson attack on Manawatu Hotel in Foxton early yesterday after being woken by an explosion.
Detective Constable Glen Jackson of Levin police said police and a fire safety officer had checked the scene and confirmed that arson was suspected.
Police believed an accelerant had been at the entrance to the bottle store, from where the fire spread into the building, he said.
Two people staying in the second storey of the hotel escaped unharmed.
