KEY POINTS:
Further gang violence in Taranaki was avoided yesterday after two Black Power members were stopped with a car full of weapons.
The two men were arrested in Patea, 28km south of Hawera, the scene of a violent confrontation between about 60 Black Power and rival Mongrel Mob gang members on Sunday.
The pair were to appear in Hawera District Court today.
Sunday's drama began after the Mongrel Mob members stopped in Patea to refuel as they made their way from Hawke's Bay to Taranaki - considered Black Power territory.
By the time they reached the southern boundary of Hawera a large group of Black Power members were waiting for them, and violence erupted.
Local residents were forced to take shelter as the two sides armed with machetes and axes fought in the street
The riot was brought under control when police escorted the Mongrel Mob out of Hawera.
