Arrests over Kaikoura seal attacks

A fatal attack on a mother seal and her pup on the Kaikoura Peninsula has resulted in two arrests.

The youths aged 15 and 17 allegedly bludgeoned the seals to death last Friday.

Department of Conservation Acting Area Manager for South Marlborough, Phil Bradfield, says one of the seals was run over and it looks like the other was shot with a paintball gun. He describes the seals as being 'mashed up.'

"There were two dead seals there and a lot of blood and mess everywhere, so it was pretty unpleasant."

The seals have been sent to Massey University, so that an autopsy can be carried out.
