KEY POINTS:
Police have arrested a man after two youths were allegedly bashed repeatedly outside the Big Kahuna Bar in Kaitaia in the early hours of Saturday.
"This could have resulted in a homicide inquiry and it appears to be due to sheer luck and the inner strength of the victims, and support of their families, that no one has died as a result of this violence," Detective Sergeant Trevor Beatson said.
One teenager was left unconscious on the street after being severely and repeatedly beaten. His injuries were thought to be life threatening but he is now recovering after being airlifted to Auckland Hospital for neurosurgery. His condition is stable.
The other sustained serious injuries, including a broken jaw and facial wounds, and will require surgery but was treated locally.
A 24-year-old man, who works as a doorman, has been arrested but police are still appealing for witnesses to the attack in Commerce Street between 2am and 3am on Saturday to come forward.
The youth transported to Auckland was supported by family, who have travelled to Auckland to be with him.
Some businesses in Kaitaia's main street had to close on Saturday while police carried out a scene examination.
