Three teenagers will face animal cruelty charges after an attack on a sheep, in which its jaw was apparently blown off with fireworks and an attempt was made to set it on fire.
The three 17-year-old students were arrested yesterday after a police patrol stopped their vehicle in Mt Maunganui.
Police said several "items of interest" were found in the vehicle but would not say what they were.
The three were allegedly seen kicking what two members of the public initially thought was a person on the base track around Mt Maunganui about 10.30pm on Sunday.
When police arrived, they found a dead sheep, which appeared to have had its lower jaw blown off by fireworks.
The animal also appeared to have been bashed with a blunt object, had an open stomach wound and attempts had been made to set it on fire.
The three received bail and are expected to appear in court tomorrow.
They are from the Rodney and North Shore areas.
