A man who was allegedly walking around a West Auckland public park with a sawn-off shotgun has been arrested.
Sergeant Shaun Palmer said the man was in custody and faced firearms charges.
Mr Palmer said armed police arrested the man without any incident near Sheehan Rd in Te Atatu.
He said police were also talking to a woman after they found cannabis in a home near-by.
He said he was grateful to people in the community for calling police at the first opportunity.
"People rang up to say: Hey, there is someone walking around with a shooter and we've taken the shooter off the street. No one was tasered and no one was shot and everyone will live to see another day," Mr Palmer said.
