KEY POINTS:
A 62-year-old man has been charged with the hit-and-run death of a well known road safety campaigner and Ironman competitor in Northland.
Frederick Joseph Ogle, 48, was on his regular Saturday morning bike ride on State Highway 14 west of Whangarei, when he was struck by a car which then sped from the scene.
Police said the car - a white, mid-90s model Subaru station wagon - was seen driving at speed on Western Hills Drive, Whangarei, shortly after the accident.
The front of the car had been damaged and the windscreen was broken.
Police put a call out asking for people to report sightings of the station wagon and today announced a vehicle had been secured and was undergoing forensic testing.
The alleged driver has been charged with failing to ascertain injury and dangerous driving causing death.
He will appear in Whangarei District Court today.
Police are still collecting information on the car's movements and want anyone who saw the car or has information on the crash to get in touch.
