An Aro Valley home was gutted in a fierce fire early this morning.
Eight fire engines were called to the fire, on Holloway Rd about 1.30am.
Firefighters had to climb more than 80 stairs to get to the single storey, wooden home in the central Wellington suburb.
Brooklyn Fire Station officer Greg McFarlane said the house was well ablaze on arrival.
"There were flames coming out of every opening such as windows and doors and it was through the roof.
"It was in the beginning stages of collapsing."
McFarlane said the blaze was out about 5.30am.
He said some exterior walls were still standing but one side of the home had completely collapsed.
"The rest is just a shell."
McFarlane said no one was at home at the time of the blaze and a fire investigator would go to the property this morning.
