A hulking trio of NZ Army vehicles had their 200-litre diesel tanks topped up in Masterton during a training trip to the South Wairarapa coast yesterday.
Each of the LAVs (light armoured vehicles) is powered by a 350hp turbo-charged diesel engine and boast a complement of four jerry cans that as a back-up were also filled yesterday, an army spokesman said.
The three-person crews aboard the vehicles, which are each worth several millions of dollars, were training in the use of long-range communications and coastal road travel, he said.
He had expected the military manoeuvres to last most of yesterday and said the LAV crews were excited about navigating the narrow roads leading to and beyond Ngawi.
