KEY POINTS:
Christchurch war veteran Frank Harvey will have medals to wear for Anzac Day, thanks to the New Zealand Army.
Mr Harvey told news media this week someone had gone into his home and stolen his medals and other items.
But Senior Sergeant Steve Kelly, of Sydenham police, said he hoped to recover the "allegedly stolen medals" with the help of Mr Harvey's family.
It is understood Mr Harvey suffers from dementia and hadn't reported the theft to police.
Meanwhile, the army has organised a replacement set for Mr Harvey to wear on Friday.
A fresh set of medals would be presented to him at the Papanui RSA tomorrow, The Press newspaper reported.
"The New Zealand Army sympathised with Mr Harvey and in recognition of his contributions to New Zealand we felt it appropriate to replace them," a spokeswoman said.
