The army is getting tough on drug use in the Linton Army Camp housing area.
Camp boss Colonel Lofty Hayward, Commander 2 Land Force Group, is threatening to evict soldiers and their civilian partners who break army tenancy rules.
He says a curfew and night patrols may be used to curb bad behaviour.
Col Hayward made his point in the camp's monthly community newspaper, The New Lintonian, this month.
"I am aware of partners who think they can smoke marijuana or 'do' P (methamphetamine) with impunity in the housing area. You may want to think again," he wrote.
"I am (also) aware of civilians who are affiliated with gangs staying over in (army) housing accommodation."
He said threatening behaviour toward soldiers and civilian employees, theft of service property, the destruction or vandalism of private and public property, and continuing loud parties were among a number of activities that had happened in in and around the camp.
He told the Manawatu Standard he wrote the column to remind people that he has a responsibility to make sure certain standards are met.
"I am sending a message to those who think they can indulge in these activities to think again."
