Friends and colleagues of long-time Herald political journalist John Armstrong gathered to celebrate his career yesterday as he bowed out of journalism.
About 70 people joined Armstrong and his family at their home in Wadestown, Wellington, to acknowledge the end of his almost 30-year career writing about politics.
The veteran journalist, who has battled Parkinson's disease for the past 16 years, has worked in Parliament's press gallery since 1987, covering 10 general elections and 28 Budget announcements. A speech by Armstrong reflecting on his life and career was read by his brother James.
Herald managing editor Shayne Currie, former Herald editor-in-chief Tim Murphy, Herald political editor Audrey Young and press gallery chair Claire Trevett also gave speeches.
A video montage of a number of politicians - prepared by 3News political editor Patrick Gower - was screened as part of celebrations.
